چکیده

Fossils have been carefully documented since the time of the Classical Greek philosophers, in particular by Aristotle and his disciples in the 4th century BC. Fossils consist of highly heterogeneous materials. Such heterogeneity results from their original complexity and the short-to-longterm changes they experienced from their death, their deposition, their entire postdeposition history to their discovery, storage, and display (i.e. taphonomy, geological history, and conservation). Ever since the early microscopic observations of petrifi ed wood by Robert Hooke (1635–1703) in 1665, cutting-edge imaging approaches have been used to investigate the fi ne-scale character of fossils. The past ten years have witnessed a great increase in imaging studies of specimens. Synchrotron radiation (SR) 3-D X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) (together termed SR-μCT) can image a fossils’ internal morphology in unprecedented detail and so help constrain phylogenetic relationships (Tafforeau et al. 2006). phylogenetic relationships (Tafforeau et al. 2006). In parallel, a suite of spectro-imaging methods have been developed for fi nescale chemical and structural characterization.

Applications of X-ray synchrotron microtomography for non-destructive 3D studies of paleontological specimens

Paleontologists are quite recent newcomers among the users of X-ray synchrotron imaging techniques at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). Studies of the external morphological characteristics of a fossil organism are not sufficient to extract all the information for a paleontological study. Nowadays observations of internal structures become increasingly important, but these obs...

Nondestructive Characterization by Advanced Synchrotron Light Techniques: Spectromicroscopy and Coherent Radiology

The advanced characteristics of synchrotron light has led in recent years to the development of a series of new experimental techniques to investigate chemical and physical properties on a microscopic scale. Although originally developed for materials science and biomedical research, such techniques find increasing applications in other domains - and could be quite useful for the study and cons...

An X-ray nanodiffraction technique for structural characterization of individual nanomaterials.

An X-ray micro/nanodiffraction technique that allows structural characterization of individual nanomaterials has been developed at an insertion-device beamline of the Advanced Photon Source. Using the extremely high brightness of the third-generation synchrotron radiation source and advanced high-resolution high-energy zone-plate focusing optics, X-rays of energies from 6 to 12 keV have been fo...

Translation of Atherosclerotic Plaque Phase-Contrast CT Imaging from Synchrotron Radiation to a Conventional Lab-Based X-Ray Source

OBJECTIVES Phase-contrast imaging is a novel X-ray based technique that provides enhanced soft tissue contrast. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of visualizing human carotid arteries by grating-based phase-contrast tomography (PC-CT) at two different experimental set-ups: (i) applying synchrotron radiation and (ii) using a conventional X-ray tube. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fi...
